Professional Marine Education
In 2002, Henry Moore received permission from the State of Connecticut, Department of Environmental Protection and Boating Education Division to provide basic boating and personal watercraft safety classes. Instruction began in a variety of venues, from hotels, local Parks & Recreation facilities, Adult Education programs, and progressed to the Connecticut Community College System.
Instructors are chosen based on the following criteria:
- The ability to communicate information clearly, effectively, and consistently from class to class.
- Possess an ability to modify the presentation in a manner which meets the needs of the students, and offer additional assistance when necessary
- Have an interest or direct experience with inland and coastal boating.
As you can see, more emphasis is placed on effective teaching rather than practical experience. Why? Well, our course is nationally accredited by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). In addition to the material that NASBLA mandates we cover, the DEP also scrutinizes and approves the curriculum that we follow. There are many subjects to cover in a defined time period, leaving little time for the class to discuss individual experiences of the instructor. The Professional Marine Education instructor must acquaint the student with the knowledge that they need to obtain certification and safely begin recreational boating in Connecticut.
Some of our instructors have impressive Coast Guard credentials and some have significant sea experience, and Professional Marine Education is privileged to have them. Read more about our individual staff members.
Connecticut Marine Services
Connecticut Marine Services (CMS) was founded by John Annino in 1989 in response to the demand for basic boating education. In addition to boating & personal watercraft classes, John began offering course in Coastal Navigation and other related topics. The primary venue for Connecticut Marine Services was the Connecticut Community College System.
When Connecticut Marine Services was transferred to Michael and Audrey Lamy, venues expanded to include many local groups, organizations, and local agencies throughout Connecticut.
There is little doubt that CMS was the largest provider of paid instruction within the Sate. Acquired by Professional Marine Education in 2005, the combined efforts have resulted in a very efficient system of statewide 1-day instruction services.
