Combination Safe Boating/Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) Course

A complete basic safe boating certification course taught in one (8 hour) day. Successful completion will allow the student to obtain a Connecticut Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation, which enables them to operate recreational vessels up to 65 feet in length including Jet Skis. This course is approved by NASBLA, and recognized by the US Coast Guard. An easy to understand classroom format is designed for students age 10 and over. Our state certified instructors have many years of teaching and personal boating experience and are ready to make your learning experience both fun and easy! Topics include: choosing the right boat, equipment requirements, state boating laws, safety regulations, navigation rules, buoy systems, trailering, safe fueling, weather, accident prevention, special topics and much more. All students receive an official diploma and state certificate application upon successful completion of the course.

Private Classes

Private classes begin at $500, and can be arranged for families, groups and individuals. These classes are generally conducted at a home or location provided by the students. Please contact Henry Moore at extension 201 for exact pricing.




Coastal Navigation Course

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) seeks to recognize and reward those boaters who have chosen to further their boating education. Upon completion of this course boaters will receive the Coastal Boater Endorsement decal to be placed on their Safe Boating Certificate or Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation.

Keep your investment "Off the Rocks" with a course in Coastal Navigation. Sharpen your boating skills and have confidence to venture to new places off shore! This course is taught in either one 8-hour session or two evening 4-hour sessions (depending upon the host location). Designed for students 14 years of age and older, the course is taught by Sate DEP certified instructors. Classes are small to ensure that students develop "hands-on" charting and plotting skills using nautical charts, tools and publications. Topics include:

• Longitude and latitude
• Taking a position fix
• Dead reckoning
• GPS and radar basics
• Compass deviation and variation
• Using plotting tools
• Marine time conversions
• Speed, distance and time calculations
• Aids to navigation
• Cruise planning and more

Students should have completed a basic boating course.




Upgrade Boating Certification to Include Personal Watercraft
 
This 2 1/2 hour course is to allow a holder of the DEP Safe Boating Certificate to upgrade to a Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation. Upon successful completion of the course you will need to send your current Safe Boating Certificate back to DEP with a fee of $25 to obtain the new certification.
